I wish more people would see obesity for what it is--an illness and a misfortune--and have some damn compassion.

Even though I was 5'6" and 221 lbs, I still struggled because of my weight. I can't imagine what you went through, but it was a bad time for me. I just got sick of it and couldn't take it anymore. It's taken two years, but I'm almost at a happy weight.

I'm really excited for you! And thank you for the shout out! :)

Like we talked about on Twitter, I think no spend challenges work really well for people who are impulse buyers - people who spend extra at the checkout counter at the grocery store or who go out to lunch at work or stop for coffee every morning. No spending challenges stop that impulsive spending and hopefully ingrain new habits after you learn to bring your lunch or make coffee at home every morning for a week or a month.

Like you, I really don't see the point in no spending challenges if you're just going to stock up on all the things you'd regularly buy beforehand or keep a list of things you wanted to buy for after the challenge.

I like your method, and I know you'll meet your goals!

Deena - I meant to swing by WalMart last night just to do a comparison and got caught in traffic and forgot. I think that's one of the things I'll do this weekend. I didn't see any of the other foods on the sale flyer, so I don't know what the everyday prices are.

Just did a comparison with my local store and the equivalent food (also substituting apples for peaches due to seasonality). This basket of goods would cost $34.28. This is a mid-range grocery store in Boston; the cheaper grocery stores don't have good websites. Still, a far cry from <$20.

I notice that the original photo has a Great Value bag, which means that maybe a bunch of this stuff is from Wal-Mart. They don't have the prices of non-sale items on their website, but is it possible that Wal-Mart is just ridic cheaper than Kroger/Publix/my store? I never shop there; does anyone know?

Just did a comparison with my local store and the equivalent food (also substituting apples for peaches due to seasonality). This basket of goods would cost $34.28. This is a mid-range grocery store in Boston; the cheaper grocery stores don’t have good websites.

This photo, along with several other "health and fitness" things I see on Pinterest get on my nerves!

A gallon of milk here is a little over $3. I'm a big milk drinker and usually go through a gallon every week. I also eat about a dozen eggs every week. At least with those, I'm able to purchase them from a coworker for $2.50/dozen.

I am one of those people that eats out more than I cook. I am working on this, but I struggle with cooking. My main issue, portion control. I always make too much, then waste it, or forget about something and it goes bad. One thing that has helped me is an online meal planning website. Yes, I have to pay for it, but every week they send me a weekly menu with shopping list. I don't have to think about it. On a good week, I'm able to cook a few meals on Sunday and be able to eat well the rest of the week.

That's the problem with getting people to eat healthier. It requires thinking and work. It isn't easy, and no one likes to do things that aren't easy.
